Workforce planning is an important action to ensure Australia's universities continue to be world leading.
That's the view of the Executive Director of the Australian Higher Education Industrial Association (AHEIA), Craig Laughton.
Mr Laughton said that in the latest world university rankings Australia had seven universities in the top 100, while the University of Melbourne and Monash University were in the top 50.
He said workforce planning is critical to continuing Australia's climb up the world university rankings.
"We have to be sure that our centres of learning excellence have the right people in the right jobs. That means analysis, forecasting and planning so that university staffing goals are achieved and students get the best education and opportunities," Mr Laughton said.
"We have commissioned the first study of substance into the use of casual labour on university campuses. The results of the study will be available within the next month.
"Early indications are that the study will inform the use of casuals as well as debunk some myths about the mode of employment that are promulgated by vested interests."
AHEIA is providing key staff from Australia's universities with the opportunity to hear experts in the field of workforce planning at a Universities HR Benchmarking Conference from September 13 to 15 in Melbourne. Delegates will hear from 13 expert speakers at the conference's working sessions on September 14 and 15.
The theme of the conference is strategic workforce planning and HR metrics.
"Speakers represent a broad spectrum of workforce planning and bring national and international experience to the table," Mr Laughton said.
The conference venue is the Pullman On The Park Melbourne.
