Eight waste wise tips for winter 29 May

Kempsey Shire Council

Anytime is a great time to think about how we can reduce the amount of waste we produce.

This winter Kempsey Shire Council is encouraging everyone to be more waste wise and reduce, reuse, repair and recycle whenever possible.

Reducing waste can also mean saving money. Making repairs or reusing something found at the op shop or at the back of the cupboard rather than buying new.

It's a win-win for residents and for the environment.

Here are 8 simple ideas to reduce the amount of waste produced daily:

  1. Choose products with minimal or no packaging.
  2. Limit use of single-use and disposable products - choose to reuse and buy alternatives that can be used over and over again.
  3. Repair household items instead of replacing them with new items.
  4. Donate unwanted clothes, household items, furniture and appliances to family, friends or a charity to sell them.
  5. Choose durable building materials, or use recycled materials when possible, and save some cash.
  6. Create a compost worm farm or get some chooks - these will all take care of food scraps and organic waste.
  7. When planning a purchase try and find it second-hand - it's amazing what people sell or give away.
  8. Keep reusable bags handy - put them in the car, handbag or backpack and ditch those plastic fruit and veg bags.
