Emergency crews responding to house fire, Ayr

Police are investigating after two people sustained critical burns in a house fire at Ayr early this morning.

Around 5.40am, emergency services were called to a blaze at an address on Home Hill Road.

A woman and man were located injured at the residence. They were transported to Ayr hospital in a critical condition and were later airlifted to Townsville University Hospital.

The 47-year-old woman and 65-year-old man, both from Ayr, remain in a critical condition.

A man aged in his 20s was also transported to Ayr Hospital with smoke inhalation.

Police had attended the residence earlier that morning around 2.15am to conduct a welfare check. The parties involved were all spoken to before officers departed.

The Bruce Highway was closed for several hours at Rossiters Hill, with diversions in place.

A crime scene has been declared and investigations are underway into the cause of the blaze.
