Emissions Reduction Fund introduces new biomethane method package

The Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) will now credit eligible biomethane projects under 3 existing waste management methods.

This will incentivise the reduction in emissions when:

  • biogas from the breakdown of organic waste is captured, refined into biomethane and combusted
  • biomethane is used as a natural gas substitute.

The method package introduces biomethane activities through a variation to the following existing ERF methods:

The Australian Government introduced the new method package following public consultation.

Biomethane was one of 5 ERF method development priorities for 2021.
