Empowering 'the Next Generation' This NAIDOC Week

Southern Cross University

Southern Cross University is celebrating NAIDOC Week with a series of on-campus events this July.

NAIDOC Week is a national event that recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The theme for 2025 is 'The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy'.

"NAIDOC Week is an incredible opportunity for students to connect with the community, learn cultural skills, and celebrate the strength and diversity of First Nations knowledge systems," said Dr Kylie Day, lecturer at Gnibi College of Indigenous Australian Peoples and Indigenous Research Academic.

"In 2025 we mark 50 years of honouring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience. This year's theme celebrates the power of young leaders and the legacy they inherit, shaped by the wisdom of Elders and the strength of community.

"NAIDOC is not just a celebration; it's a time to listen deeply, rejoice in cultural strength, and walk alongside the community in honouring the next generation. I encourage all students to participate in a mighty movement grounded in unity, respect, and self-determination."

NAIDOC celebrations will be held at each main campus including a Welcome to Country, cultural performances, musicians, community stalls and workshops/activities.

The events will include a special performance by Australian country musician and proud Gumbaynggirr/Bundjalung man, Troy Cassar-Daley.
