The economic participation of women is a powerful driver of inclusive growth, human rights, and social equity. However, in the Arab region, women remain significantly underrepresented in the workforce due to entrenched structural, economic, legal, cultural, and institutional barriers.
In partnership with the League of Arab States (LAS) and UN Women, ESCWA held a regional meeting on 19 and 20 July gathering members of the Subcommittee on Gender Equality and the SDGs to examine factors that allow women's access to economic opportunities, with a focus on financial inclusion and recognizing unpaid care work.
Participants explored strategies to enhance women's economic participation, showcased tools to measure financial inclusion, and examined legal and policy reforms needed to advance care economies.
