EOI issued for demolition of Princess Margaret Hospital

  • Expressions of Interest issued for demolition of Princess Margaret Hospital site buildings
  • Complex task requires preservation of several heritage buildings
  • Demolition contractor expected to be confirmed by mid-2020
  • The McGowan Government is embarking on the next stage of the Subi East Redevelopment project, seeking qualified contractors for the demolition and remediation of the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) site.

An Expression of Interest process launched today will shortlist up to three respondents.

Contractors for the major works will be evaluated against a range of criteria including demolition methodology, comparable experience and project understanding, with shortlisted proponents undertaking further due diligence and review of the site.

The site includes heritage listed or significant buildings that will be preserved, including Godfrey House and the Former Multi-Faith Chapel.

Removal of the majority of the former hospital buildings signals the next major step in the creation of Subi East as a vibrant inner-city village on the doorstep of the Perth CBD.

On completion, Subi East will provide more than 2,000 new dwellings for multicultural and multigenerational living and feature walkable links through gardens and recreation spaces including the Subiaco Oval playing surface and the newly opened Bob Hawke College.

The successful contractor is expected to be announced by mid-year along with a works program, including demolition methodology and construction and safety management plans.

As stated by Planning Minister Rita Saffioti:

"The call for tenders for the demolition of the former PMH follows the successful demolition of the Subiaco Oval grandstands, the first stage of the Subi East Redevelopment project.

"With the reinstated Subiaco Oval soon to be available for use by the community and Bob Hawke College students, we are ready to take the next step in the development of Subi East.

"The demolition of the majority of PMH site buildings and the subsequent remediation work will be a huge undertaking that will create hundreds of local jobs. The local Subiaco economy is set to benefit from this as Australia's largest inner-city redevelopment continues to take shape.

"Princess Margaret Hospital holds many special memorials for families all across our State. We will respect those memories by preserving and retaining significant heritage buildings on the site, as well as reflecting the emotional connection for many Western Australians as part of the Master Planning process."
