EPA lays charges for excessive stockpiles and waste leaks

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has laid 12 charges against a company and two individuals under the Environment Protection Act 1970 following an investigation into the management of scrap metal stockpiles containing combustible recyclable and waste materials at Tottenham.

The company charged is: Manhari International Pty Ltd of 414 Somerville Road, Tottenham 3012.

The charges allege that the company and two individuals:

• failed to install controls required to prevent liquid waste from leaving the property and accessing land at 414 Somerville Rd, Tottenham,

• failed to keep stockpiles of scrap metal containing combustible recyclable and waste materials (CRWM) within the required size limits,

• failed to ensure the stockpiles were a sufficient distance from buildings,

• failed to report compliance actions to EPA Victoria, and

• failed to comply with requirements of a regulatory notice to assess for contaminated land.

The alleged breaches are criminal offences under sections 31A(7) and 62A(3) of the Environment Protection Act 1970.
