Exit Trafficking, Forced Marriage Top Modern Slavery Crimes

A new report has revealed that for the 2024-2025 financial year, the Australian Federal Police received 371 reports of alleged modern slavery.

Modern slavery is when someone is forced to work, marry or do other things through coercion (like manipulation, control or violence), threats or lies.

These are the latest figures from the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) report Modern slavery in Australia 2024-25.

A total of 160 modern slavery offences were identified from the 132 reports accepted for investigation by the AFP and not subsequently withdrawn. Thirty-two percent of offences related to exit trafficking and 29 percent to forced marriage.

Victim-survivors were mostly female (87%) and identified perpetrators were mostly male (88%) with around seven in ten victim-survivors and perpetrators born overseas.

"This new report adds to the evidence on modern slavery in Australia, which will help shape future policy that responds to this important issue," said AIC Deputy Director Dr Rick Brown.

Established in 2022, the Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery National Minimum Dataset describes the nature and outcomes of reports of modern slavery in Australia, and the characteristics of suspected victim-survivors and perpetrators.
