Expressions of Interest Open for Historic Shot Tower Site

Tasmanian Government

Expressions of Interest are now open for the future operation and stewardship of the Shot Tower Historic Site.

Minister for Parks and Heritage, Nick Duigan, said it was a unique opportunity for a suitably qualified operator to manage one of Tasmania's most iconic heritage tourism attractions.

"The Expression of Interest process will identify an operator capable of preserving the site's significant heritage values while delivering a sustainable visitor experience for Tasmanians and visitors alike," Minister Duigan said.

"We are seeking an operator with the vision, experience and commitment to protect this remarkable site while enhancing its role as a destination for visitors, education and heritage interpretation."

Constructed in approximately 1870 by Joseph Moir, the Shot Tower remains one of the most significant surviving examples of nineteenth-century industrial heritage infrastructure in Tasmania and has welcomed visitors for generations.

The site includes the iconic tower, former shot manufacturing facilities, visitor areas, retail spaces and surrounding grounds.

The Government is seeking proposals that demonstrate the capability to operate a commercially sustainable tourism venture while delivering positive visitor, community and heritage outcomes.

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate:

* Experience operating tourism, hospitality, heritage or visitor attractions

* An understanding of heritage conservation requirements

* A commitment to maintaining public access and visitor experiences

* The financial capacity to operate and maintain the site

* A vision for the future development and presentation of the Shot Tower Historic Site.

Expressions of Interest will be assessed through a competitive process against the criteria, and a preferred proponent will then be identified for negotiation of a future lease arrangement.

The Shot Tower will remain temporarily closed for maintenance while the Expression of Interest process is underway and a new operator is secured for the site.

Expressions of Interest close on Friday 6 November.
