Extradition and sexual assault charges at Cairns

A 47-year-old Sydney man has been extradited to Cairns from New South Wales overnight, June 8, following investigations into the indecent treatment of a child.

It will be alleged the incidents occurred between 2014 and 2015 in Mareeba and involved a child known to the man.

The matter was reported to detectives from Cairns District Child Protection and Investigation Unit in March last year and extensive investigations led to the man being located and arrested in New South Wales with the assistance of New South Wales police.

The man was brought back to Queensland by detectives last night, June 8.

The man has been charged with one count each of rape and indecent treatment of children and is due to appear before Cairns Magistrates Court today, June 9.

Cairns District Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU) Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Gooiker warned police will continue to target offenders in our community.

"We investigate all reports of offences against children, and acknowledge the courage required by a young person to come forward and make a complaint," Detective Senior Sergeant Gooiker said.

"Thanks to their bravery in speaking up, we will continue to work with vulnerable children to prosecute offenders in the courts."
