Fair Fares During Track Delays

Liberal Party Victoria

The Liberals and Nationals are calling for fares to be suspended for commuters impacted by the Clifton Hill derailment on Sunday night.

Commuters on the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines are facing several more days of disruption, delays and inconvenience and should be able to undertake their normal commute free of charge for the duration of the disruption.

One way travel times have more than doubled to an hour and a half for most commuters on the impacted lines.

Removing all trains for a week or more is not a 'slight inconvenience' as the Labor Government says, it's a major one.

Shadow Minister for Public Transport Matthew Guy said "The Government couldn't care less about the inconvenience and stress affected commuters are subject to. Labor thinks it is appropriate for commuters to continue to pay for a regular service that isn't running.

"To add insult to injury the Allan Labor Government will likely force affected travellers to jump through a range of bureaucratic hoops and have to apply for compensation weeks or months down the track.

"Commuters should not have to pay regular fares for a sub-standard non-regular service and they should not be forced to apply for compensation and prove they were impacted.

"The Liberals and Nationals are calling for fares to be suspended until normal services resume. This is the only genuine way to support affected travellers.

"This is just another example of Labor's inability to provide basic services that all Victorians deserve," Mr. Guy said

"This is yet another example of Victorians paying the price for Labor's mismanagement."
