Family fun to open Beenleigh Aquatic Centre

Legendary Australian swimming coach Laurie Lawrence will be running the learn-to-swim program at the new Beenleigh Aquatic Centre.

The new-look Beenleigh Aquatic Centre will open to the public with a free family fun day on Saturday, March 16.

The open day, from 10am to 2pm, will highlight the City Rd centre's new indoor heated pool and outdoor water playground.

Stage one of the redevelopment plan included construction of a heated indoor pool with a viewing area, kiosk, office, plant equipment, change facilities and a water play area.

Acting Mayor Cherie Dalley said the community was invited to come along and enjoy the upgraded facility.

"Anyone attending will be able to enjoy free outdoor swimming and entertainment throughout the day," Cr Dalley said.

"Activities include water-safety demonstrations from former Olympic swim coach Laurie Lawrence, aqua aerobics and free swim assessments."

The community will also be able to meet the Kids Alive characters Boo and Lil the Lifesaver as well as the 96.5 FM Street Machine team from 11am.

Giveaways will include free ice creams from the Paddle Pop Lion and a free sausage sizzle.

People can also put themselves in the running to win one free term of swimming lessons.

The prize draw will take place from 1.45pm.

City Lifestyle and Community Committee Chairperson Councillor Steve Swenson said he encouraged people to get involved and enjoy the fun.

"The first 50 people through the door from 10am will win a prize pack with swimming cap, goggles and a drink bottle in a swim bag," Cr Swenson said.

Councillor Jennie Breene said it was exciting to be able to provide additional facilities for the community.

"Learn-to-swim classes will be more readily available with the new centre and this will help to ensure that local children can gain the vital water skills they need," she said.

Anyone signing up to classes at the centre on the day will receive one free lesson in both term two and three.
