FAO Meets Saint Kitts & Nevis Agri Secretary Flemming

On the sidelines of the 44th Session of the FAO Ministerial Conference at FAO headquarters in Rome, the FAO Director-General met with H.E. Miguel Flemming, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

The Director-General greeted the Permanent Secretary and praised the partnership with Saint Kitts and Nevis, reaffirming to continue expanding the collaboration further.

The Permanent Secretary thanked the Director-General and commended the close alliance with FAO for its scope and operational efficiency. He highlighted the instrumental support that FAO provided to agriculture and fisheries, and noted that the country's exposure to hurricanes and other climate events often made it difficult for the government to quickly and comprehensively address the needs of farmers and fishers.

Furthermore, the Permanent Secretary discussed the country's plans to increase agricultural production, value chains, and contributions to gross domestic product by collaborating closely with FAO. He also informed that Saint Kitts and Nevis would be hosting the Caribbean Week of Agriculture scheduled for 29 September through 3 October 2025.

The Director-General acknowledged the country's priorities and welcomed its intention to empower the agricultural and aquacultural sectors sustainably. Likewise, the Director-General stated that it was key for Saint Kitts and Nevis and neighboring countries to adequately address their exposure to extreme, highly damaging climate events, and that FAO stood ready to scale up appropriate support. The Director-General wished Saint Kitts and Nevis success in hosting the upcoming Caribbean Week of Agriculture as an important forum for agricultural development in the region.
