The Allan Labor Government is getting more homes off the ground faster - accelerating the approval of more than 90 new homes across two projects in Melbourne's east, close to public transport, schools, jobs and shops.
Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny has given the green light to two projects in the heart of Camberwell - including 57 new homes at 691-693 Burke Road and 36 new homes at 552A Burke Road, fast-tracked through the Labor Government's Development Facilitation Program.
Both projects are just around the corner from Camberwell Junction - a thriving shopping precinct serviced by Camberwell Station, tram routes 70, 72 and 75, and nearby schools including Camberwell Primary School and Camberwell High School.
The $66.7 million project at 691-693 Burke Road will deliver one, two and three-bedroom apartments in a 14-storey building with 118 car parks, 50 bike spaces, new retail and office spaces.
Across the road, the $55.9 million eight-storey development at 552A Burke Road will provide 36 new homes, a café and gallery, and a new pedestrian link to Lower Reserve beside the historic St John's Anglican Church.
The Government's Development Facilitation Program streamlines the planning process for priority projects that boost investment in the economy, keep people in jobs, and create homes for Victorians. To be eligible for this pathway, housing projects must deliver at least 10 per cent affordable housing.
Since the Development Facilitation Program opened to residential development two years ago, more than 6,900 homes have been fast-tracked by the Minister for Planning through this pathway.
Victoria continues to lead the nation in housing approvals and builds, and this is backed by our bold reforms to boost supply - including through unlocking space for homes near trains and trams, making it easier to build a townhouse and setting housing targets for every local government area.
As stated by Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny
"We've fast-tracked more than 90 homes in Camberwell because it's exactly the right place for them - close to the public transport, shops, jobs, schools and services."
"We want more Victorians to have the same opportunities their parents had - that's why our bold reforms are helping boost housing supply, in areas where Victorians have been locked out for far too long."
As stated by Member for Southern Metropolitan Region John Berger
"Camberwell's an incredible place to live, and we want more Victorians to have the chance to call this community home and live close to the things that matter to them."
