Fatal helicopter crash - Sturt Plateau

Northern Territory Police are investigating a fatal helicopter crash that occurred in the Sturt Plateau, about 80km south of Mataranka, on Friday afternoon.

The 59-year-old pilot had not been heard from after contacting a station in the area informing of his intent to land.

A search effort coordinated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) located the aircraft and pilot at 5pm on 9 December 2023.

The pilot was located deceased at the wreckage of his Robinson R22 helicopter.

Northern Territory Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) will be conducting an investigation on behalf of the ATSB.
