Feline Friends Finding Their Feet Through Fostering

Cats aren't at their best behind bars says Eurobodalla Council's manager of compliance Nathan Ladmore.

With that in mind, Council is trialling a new foster program with local trained volunteers taking cats and kittens out of the animal shelter and into their homes while they assess the animals' needs and personalities. Mr Ladmore says foster care can reveal the sides of a cat not seen at the shelter.

"Is the cat good with children or dogs? Are they social or more content doing their own thing? They can understand the sort of home and kind of owner will be just right for each cat. With the guess work gone, we can find the right match," Mr Ladmore says.

Council will continue to provide the food and other essentials while foster carers will provide day-to-day care, with observations and photos that will help find each animal its permanent home. The volunteer team includes people experienced in caring for very young kittens, providing Council with extra options when very young animals arrive requiring specialist care.
