Residents across Knox are celebrating Diwali, the Festival of Lights, on 8 November.
Ruchi Sharma, President and Founder of Hello Zindagi shares that Diwali "represents togetherness, hope and the victory of good over evil. It is a time to reconnect with our culture, rituals, traditions, family and friends - and to share those traditions with others".
"For many Indian migrants, Diwali can also be an emotional time. Being away from family and friends back home can make us miss our people and our familiar traditions even more. Celebrating together in our adopted home helps create a sense of belonging and reminds us that culture can travel with us".
For Suresh Dabasia, from Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Melbourne, "As part of our celebration, we will prepare and offer more than 200+ different food dishes to Lord Swaminarayan, reflecting our devotion, religious traditions and rich cultural heritage. The event will bring together our congregation and the wider community to celebrate this auspicious occasion and promote cultural understanding, community spirit and togetherness".
If you can't attend an event, Indy Jasal from Indian Senior Citizens Association shares that you can also get involved "By inviting friends home and sharing vegetarian food, lighting candles and sparkles and share stories".
"Diwali is an opportunity for everyone to share in happiness, learn about another culture and build friendships. You don't have to be Indian to celebrate Diwali. You simply need to come with curiosity, openness and a willingness to enjoy the experience," shared Ruchi Sharma.
