Fficer punched, man charged in Sydney City

A man will appear in court today after allegedly punching a police officer in the Sydney CBD.

About 10pm yesterday (Saturday 21 May 2022), officers attached to Sydney City Police Area Command attempted to stop a vehicle on Harwood Lane, Pyrmont, when the driver stopped and allegedly ran from the scene.

Police initiated a foot pursuit before the man allegedly punched a Probationary Constable in the face multiple times.

The man continued running and attempted to re-enter his vehicle and drive away when police stopped and arrested him.

During a search of his vehicle, police seized a modified scissor blade.

Checks also revealed the man was unlicenced and had an outstanding conviction warrant.

The 30-year-old man was taken to Day Street Police Station where he was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, have custody of an offensive implement in a public place, and never licensed person drive vehicle on road.

He was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court today (Sunday 22 May 2022).

The officer suffered minor injuries to his face but did not require medical treatment.
