Final AMA Trainee Forum For 2025

Australian Medical Association

The final AMA Trainee Forum for 2025 - Trainee Perspectives on Best Practice in Supervision - was held earlier this month.

Chair of the Council of Doctors in Training, Dr Sanjay Hettige, said while supervision is at the heart of medical training, it's a system under growing strain.

The forum posed several questions including:

  • What are the ideal attributes of a great supervisor?
  • Can trainees safely provide feedback on supervision quality?
  • Do supervisors receive adequate training and recognition?
  • How can Colleges measure supervision quality at accreditation visits?
  • And importantly - how do we make being a supervisor a fulfilling role again?

Dr Hettige said it was fantastic to hear the varied perspectives from College Trainee Committee Chairs across specialties during the forum.

"There was consensus that the sustainability of our current supervision model is at risk - but also optimism that with the right structures and support, we can strengthen it for future generations of doctors," he said.

A communique summarising key insights will be released soon - stay tuned.
