Finance Minister Meets with Chief Economists on Economic Outlook

Department of Finance Canada

Today, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, met with chief economists from major Canadian financial institutions to discuss their outlook on the Canadian and global economies, and to hear their views on the government's work to support and invest in Canadians.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that Canada is facing global economic headwinds from a position of fundamental economic strength. Today, over 800,000 more Canadians are employed compared to before the pandemic. Canada has recovered 126 per cent of the jobs lost to COVID, compared to 112 per cent in the United States. Canada's economic outlook remains positive, and the IMF projects that Canada will have the strongest growth in the G7 by the fourth quarter of this year.

The Deputy Prime Minister and chief economists discussed the positive economic impacts of Canada's ambitious pro-immigration policies and the government's national system of affordable early learning and child care, both of which support the growth of Canada's labour force.

Ahead of Budget 2023, the Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to prudent fiscal management.
