Finding Home For Fido - Wollongong

Dog lovers, we challenge you to take one look at Fido's expressive brown eyes and to say 'no' to that sweet face.

Three-and-a-half months have passed since Fido came into Council's care as a lost dog.

In that time, he's earnt himself the questionable honour of being the dog who has been waiting for adoption the longest out of all the dogs currently in Council's care.

He is currently in foster care with a family, and the feedback is that he is a gentle giant who is particularly good with kids.

"What we've heard from the foster carers is that he loves car rides and a good sunbake in the backyard during the day,'' Wollongong City Council's Animal Care & Impounding Service Project Director Daniel Kennedy.

"He has thrived on the routine that comes from being part of a family and has been a quick learner when it comes to brushing up his walking and toilet training.''

It has been 15 months since Council launched its Animal Care and Impounding Service in response to the RSPCA shifting its focus away from lost and found animals.

In that time Council has found homes for a grand total of more than 500 cats and dogs.

"It has been a real joy watching 202 dogs and 316 cats meet and then be welcomed into their forever homes and their new families,'' Mr Kennedy said.

"It's particularly lovely when we get messages back from the new owners letting us know how their pets are getting on. It's such a good feeling.''

If you fancy giving Fido or one of the other cats and dogs in Council's care a new home, check out our website to see all the animals currently available for adoption.

Alternatively, if a permanent pet isn't going to work with your current lifestyle, Council has a program of foster carers. The carers look after the animal while it waits to be adopted.

"We've a passionate band of foster carers and we're really grateful for their care as it means the cats and dogs can be looked after in a home environment while they wait for adoption,'' Mr Kennedy said.

"We provide everything they need – including covering the costs of food and veterinary care – and the carers just provide the love and space.

"For some people, such as those who love to travel, it's an arrangement that works really well for them and their lifestyles.''
