As we approach another summer here in Victoria, RSPCA Victoria and CFA are urging Victorians to include pets in their bushfire survival plans.
Pet owners can save valuable time in fire emergencies by having bedding, food, and water ready to go for their furry friend.
RSPCA Victoria Head of Prevention, Rebecca Cook said including pets in bushfire survival plans was critical.
"For many people, pets are family, and ensuring you are prepared can make all the difference in an emergency," Ms Cook said.
"Too often, people plan for themselves but forget to consider what they'll do with their pets in an emergency; we need Victorians to think about this now, not when it's too late.
"Putting together a pet emergency kit, checking identification details are current, and planning where you'll go if you need to leave quickly are important steps every pet owner can take.
"Every pet deserves a plan, and every pet owner has a role to play in helping keep their animals safe during Victoria's emergency season."
CFA Chief Officer Garry Cook AFSM said a bushfire plan should include every member of the household, including pets and animals.
"Everyone should always prioritise their own safety, however your bushfire plan isn't fully complete unless it accounts for your pets," Garry said.
"Knowing where you'll take them, how you'll transport them, and what supplies they'll need can make all the difference when time is limited.
"For people with horses or livestock, a dedicated plan is essential. Large animals often require more time and specific arrangements, so it's important to decide early what action you'll take.
"If relocating livestock isn't possible, the safest option may be a large, well-grazed paddock with secure fencing and access to water, located away from heavily treed areas and roads.
"The most important thing is not to leave decisions until the last minute. Early action protects both you and your animals and reduces the risks during a bushfire.
More than 630 CFA brigades are running Get Fire Ready events across the state throughout October until 8 November.
CFA volunteers at these events will be available to discuss fire preparedness, including your animals and livestock. To find a Get Fire Ready event near you, please visit cfa.vic.gov.au/about-us/cfa-events/get-fire-ready.
