Fixing 215 empty homes priority for Labor

Tasmanian Labor

A Labor Government would take immediate action to repair uninhabitable social housing to get hundreds of people off the housing waiting list.

Tasmanian Labor Leader Rebecca White says it is inexcusable that 215 homes around the state have been deemed "untenantable" in the latest Productivity Commission Report on Government Services, meaning they're not fit for living due to disrepair and decay.

"A Labor Government will immediately prioritise the repair of these 215 homes as a matter of priority to get 215 families off the housing wait list," Ms White said.

"Allowing these homes to fall into disrepair has added more pressure on the housing wait list, something the State Government is wholly responsible for."

"Housing is a key priority for Labor, and a Labor Government would fix these houses as a matter of urgency," Ms Haddad said.

"That is more than we can say about the Liberal Government. They have neglected housing from the day they took office nearly a decade ago.

"Labor's plan to fix these 215 homes will create jobs and mean there would be 215 fewer families waiting in desperate need for somewhere to call home.

"There would be negligible impact on the state budget, unless the government never planned to fix them.

"The Liberals talk big on housing promises, but simply fail to deliver. They are consistently falling well short of their own target of delivering the 1,000 homes needed per year to meet their 2023 target of 10,000 homes.

"The truth is the net gain of government and social housing under the nearly ten years of Liberal government is only 400. That is an abysmal failing in a state where housing need is so high and growing day by day.

"Their neglect has allowed the housing crisis in Tasmania to worsen and they are letting down Tasmanians every day."
