Works on the Byron Bay Drainage Upgrade – Town Centre Catchment Stage 1 are nearing completion, with the intersection at Fletcher Street and Byron Street expected to close from mid-September.
"Construction is now almost finished, with only another few months of work on this project to go," said Christopher Soulsby, Manager Assets and Major Projects.
Over September, October and November contractors will finish installing new drainage, finalise footpath and road upgrades, and complete line marking. The pedestrian bridge between Butler Street and the rail corridor will also be reinstated.
"This has been the largest drainage upgrade to be completed in the Byron Shire, with almost 350 metres of drainage installed to date, and it will reduce the impacts and frequency of flooding in the town centre," said Mr Soulsby.
"For this last stage of works, we are temporarily changing four-hour parking on Byron Street (between Middleton Street and Fletcher Street) to two-hour parking, to encourage turnover and more foot traffic to the businesses impacted by the works.
"We'd really like to thank businesses and property owners in the town centre for their patience with this project," said Mr Soulsby.
Detours will be in place for road users. Pedestrian access will be available – please follow signage and traffic control.
The Byron Bay Drainage Upgrade Town Centre Catchment is funded by the Australian and NSW Governments and by Byron Shire Council's Byron Bay Town Centre Masterplan Reserve.
