Flood Response Earns Team National Award

MidCoast Council

MidCoast Council's Water and Systems Team has been named the 2025 National Team of the Year by the Water Industry Operations Association of Australia (WIOA).

The award recognises the team's coordinated response to the devastating flood in May, with the team working around the clock to minimise the impacts of the flood on essential water and sewer services.

Council's Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott, said it was an extraordinary response to one of the region's worst natural disasters.

"Some of the things our staff were able to achieve when so much of our infrastructure had been inundated was quite remarkable," said Mr Scott.

"They had the majority of our sewer pump stations back in operation within two days and the Wingham Sewage Treatment Plant running close to full capacity within six days.

"We had staff going door-to-door handing out bottles of water when water supply to Wingham was unexpectedly cut off.

"I'm really proud of the team's efforts and I'm equally proud of the resilience the community showed during such a testing time. This award is a testament to that."

Mr Scott said the response to the flood was still ongoing for the Water and Systems Team, as it was for many parts of the organisation.

"We've been working to restore a permanent water supply to Wingham since soon after the flood and I'm happy to report it should be back online by early December," he said.

"Our contractors have nearly finished drilling under the Manning River and from there it'll be a matter of installing the new main and connecting it back up to the water network."
