MidCoast Council is inviting community feedback on a review of its floodplain risk management studies and plans after major floods in 2021, 2022 and 2025.
"MidCoast Council has in place flood risk management studies and plans, and we keep them updated. This is a requirement of the NSW Government."
Things change rapidly in this area. New technologies mean we have better information that helps us predict the impact of flooding on properties and infrastructure.
With climate change, we are likely to see more frequent and severe flooding and State and Federal Governments are adapting their responses.
"After the devastating 2021 and 2022 floods, Council obtained funding from the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water to conduct a review of our flood management plans" said Mr Scott.
Council's consultant has produced a report which is on public exhibition for community feedback. The report's recommended actions will update our flood risk management studies and plans to provide better flood management for the community.
The main recommendations that will impact property owners within the flood planning area are concerned with access to the schemes for voluntary house raising and purchase by the NSW Government.
Both these schemes are complex and require processes set by the NSW Government and outside Council's control. These actions merely provide the opportunity for people to apply to the State Government via Council, if they meet NSW Government eligibility requirements.
