FOGO, Glass Collections Begin in One Week

Ballarat, Burrumbeet, Learmonth, Miners Rest and Buninyong - get ready to roll out your new bins!

In just seven days, the City of Ballarat will begin collecting FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) and glass recycling, making it easier than ever to recycle and reduce waste.

The final deliveries of 9,000 FOGO and 53,000 glass bins to homes across the municipality are now taking place. All kitchen caddies and information packs have been delivered.

From Monday 3 November, households can start using their lime green lid FOGO bins for food and garden waste and new purple lid bins for glass recycling.

The municipality's first dedicated FOGO and glass recycling collections are part of the City of Ballarat's commitment to creating a more sustainable future and meeting state-wide waste reduction targets.

What you need to know:

  • There are no changes to waste collection services over the upcoming Tuesday 4 November Melbourne Cup Day public holiday
  • FOGO bins will be collected fortnightly
  • Glass recycling bins will be collected every four weeks
  • General household waste and mixed recycling collections will continue as usual

City of Ballarat Mayor, Cr Tracey Hargreaves said the new system will help divert thousands of tonnes of food and glass waste from landfill each year.

"This is a significant change for our community and a positive step towards a cleaner, greener Ballarat," she said.

"All your food waste and glass will be recycled into new products, with food waste and garden clippings being transformed into compost for our parks and gardens."

Bin storage in smaller properties

The City of Ballarat understands that storing four bins may be challenging for smaller properties, particularly units and townhouses in larger complexes.

For residents living in complexes with an owners corporation, the City of Ballarat can work with the corporation to implement bin sharing arrangements agreed to by all residents.

If you would like to explore this option, residents can ask their owners corporation to contact the City of Ballarat's Environment Business Support team by emailing [email protected].

Residents can also continue to drop off glass at one of the Pass on Glass sites until Sunday 30 November. The Pass on Glass drop-off sites in the community will then close.

The Pass on Glass site at the Ballarat Transfer Station in Gillies Street will remain open.

Residents are encouraged to download the free Ballarat Waste app and get ready for the new services via the App Store or on Google Play.

Residents can also access a 12-month bin collection calendar for their address in other ways.
