Fraud charges - Birkdale

Detectives from the Crime and Intelligence Command's Financial and Cyber Crime Group have charged a man after he allegedly defrauded an elderly man of $700,000.

In July 2021, detectives commenced an investigation after receiving reports of an alleged fraud targeting a 95-year-old man.

Following extensive enquiries, yesterday (December 13), police executed a search warrant on a home at Birkdale where a 33-year-old man was arrested and charged with fraud related offences.

Police will allege the Birkdale man dishonestly induced the 95-year-old man to part with $680,000 over three months in 2020 and accessed the elderly man's bank account stealing $20,000 from it.

He has been charged with three counts of fraud, one count of stealing and one count of computer hacking. The man is due to appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court on February 2 2022.

Queensland Police would like to thank the Australian Defence Force, Joint Military Police Unit from Brisbane for assistance in this investigation.
