Cardinia Shire Council's COVID-19 Community Recovery Committee has planned a series of community events designed to build community connection following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
Formed in January 2021 and made up of a group of community volunteers, the committee's focus is to understand the needs of the Cardinia Shire community following the COVID-19 pandemic and support community-led recovery and resilience.
Chair of the Cardinia Shire Council's COVID-19 Community Recovery Committee, Cr Tammy Radford, highlighted the need to refocus, reconnect and rediscover Cardinia Shire following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
"Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic we heard how people were missing those all-important connections to community, friends and family. For some, the pandemic highlighted a lack of local support networks, particularly if friends and family lived interstate or overseas. We also know a sense of community connection is imperative to good mental health."
"Our goal with these events is to bring the community together, showcase the range of local social groups and support services available and to foster the local connections we turn to in times of need," explained Councillor Radford.
A series of free community events will be held across the Cardinia Shire at Bridgewood Primary School, Officer and Living and Learning, Pakenham along with special screenings of the documentary film 'In My Blood It Runs' on Sorry Day and Mabo Day at Pakenham Library followed by a Q&A session with COVID-19 Community Recovery Committee member Aunty Anni TSI who will share her thoughts and observations about living in Australia as one of Australia's First People.
"Whether you're looking for a new group to join such as a Men's Shed, gardening club or craft circle or you want to get out and about and connect with your local community, these events are for you. They're the perfect opportunity to check out our community facilities, grab some information and maybe even a free sausage," said Councillor Radford.

These events are free and run in accordance with Cardinia Shire Council's COVIDSafe Plan.
