A large-scale light installation from internationally renowned Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde will be presented for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere tomorrow as part of the 2019 Fremantle Biennale.
Waterlicht, which runs for three nights at Fremantle's Esplanade Reserve, explores the universal power and poetry of water while addressing rising water levels along Fremantle's shoreline.
A soundscape will accompany Waterlicht, telling stories about Fremantle by traditional custodians, prominent civic figures, historians, artists and community members.
The Fremantle Biennale is a three-week art event held every two years that features experimental site-responsive contemporary art by local, national and international artists.
Exhibitions, performances, installations and walking tours will be presented at various locations including Port's South and North Mole, HMAS Ovens Submarine, Esplanade Park, WA Maritime Museum, B-Shed, PS Art Space, Old Customs House and the Fishing Boat Harbour.
The WA Maritime Museum is a major partner of Biennale, providing in-kind support through its venues including theatres, function centres and museum gallery and outdoor spaces for both the program launch and the event itself, as well as security and additional staffing.
