Fremantle Biennale brings international act to our shores

  • Large-scale light installation Waterlicht to open 2019 Fremantle Biennale
  • Guiding theme of 2019 program is UNDERCURRENT
  • 2019 program supported by Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, WA Maritime Museum and Water Corporation
  • A large-scale light installation from internationally renowned Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde will be presented for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere tomorrow as part of the 2019 Fremantle Biennale.

Waterlicht, which runs for three nights at Fremantle's Esplanade Reserve, explores the universal power and poetry of water while addressing rising water levels along Fremantle's shoreline.

A soundscape will accompany Waterlicht, telling stories about Fremantle by traditional custodians, prominent civic figures, historians, artists and community members.

The Fremantle Biennale is a three-week art event held every two years that features experimental site-responsive contemporary art by local, national and international artists.

Exhibitions, performances, installations and walking tours will be presented at various locations including Port's South and North Mole, HMAS Ovens Submarine, Esplanade Park, WA Maritime Museum, B-Shed, PS Art Space, Old Customs House and the Fishing Boat Harbour.

The WA Maritime Museum is a major partner of Biennale, providing in-kind support through its venues including theatres, function centres and museum gallery and outdoor spaces for both the program launch and the event itself, as well as security and additional staffing.

The 2019 Fremantle Biennale program runs from November 1 to 24, 2019 and can be viewed at: http://www.fremantlebiennale.com.au

As stated by Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman:

"This is a fantastic opportunity for Western Australians to be inspired by the work of Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde, and for our local artists to share a platform with international artists of this calibre.

"The 2019 program includes 15 new commissions, supporting over 40 local, national and international artists.

"Congratulations to the entire Fremantle Biennale team led by Tom Muller, Corrine Van Hall and Katherine Wilkinson for delivering this ambitious and bold program for Western Australians."

As stated by Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk:

"The Fremantle Biennale is fast becoming the kick starter to the festival season and is eagerly anticipated for its diversity and sensitive interpretation of the physical landscape.

"This year's theme is Undercurrent and I am looking forward to seeing some of the wonderful free events and enjoying the buzz the festival brings to Fremantle."
