April is pet registration time and Council is reminding all cat and dog owners to ensure animal registration is renewed by 10 April.

Pet owners can register to receive their future animal registration renewal notices by email. Once you register you will no longer receive a paper version of that notice.

Victorian legislation (Domestic Animals Act 1994) requires that every cat and dog over the age of three months is microchipped and registered with Council.

Mayor of Maroondah, Cr Kylie Spears said dogs and cats that are registered and microchipped had a far greater chance of being reunited with their owner quickly and safely should they get lost or be found wandering.

"There are many benefits to owning a pet, but with pet ownership comes certain responsibilities, including ensuring that your dog or cat is registered and microchipped by the age of three months, Cr Spears said.

"Our Local Laws officers rescue hundreds of pets that go missing each year, and we've been able to successfully reunite 100 per cent of those animals who were properly registered," she said.

"Aside from the peace of mind you get from registering your pet, animal registration fees are important as they help Council to fund important animal management services and activities, such as lost and found services, off-leash dog parks and dog exercise equipment, and responsible pet ownership education programs.

"Microchipping also provides a permanent form of identification, and your pet's details will be recorded on a nationally accredited database," Cr Spears added.

For first-time animal registrations, once registration fees are paid, pet owners are issued with a lifetime identification tag to attach to their pet's collar, which must be worn at all times.

Pet owners must ensure they keep the same identification tag affixed to their animal's collar for the duration of its registration with Maroondah.

The annual registration fee is significantly reduced for animals that are desexed. Eligible concession card holders may also receive substantial discounts.

Under the Domestic Animals Act, penalties may apply to owners of unregistered animals found wandering and those found not wearing a registration tag.

If your pet has passed away or you have relocated outside of Maroondah, it is also important for owners to notify Council as soon as possible.

Cleaning up after your pet

Dog owners are also encouraged to show courtesy for their fellow community members by picking up after their pet.

Dog droppings contain harmful nutrients and bacteria, and this can end up in our local waterways via the stormwater system.

There are Council-installed dog waste bag dispensers at various local parks, however owners are encouraged to carry appropriate receptacles, such as a bag, pouch or pooper-scooper, to remove any dispose of any dog waste when out walking.
