Two kids. Two completely different stories. One life changing program.
When Yawa launched a pilot of fully funded swimming scholarships, they hoped it would help a few local families. What they didn't expect was the impact.
Seven year old Lilith arrived too scared to shower or get her face wet. By her fourth lesson she was underwater, grinning, while her mum cheered from the side. "It's a total 100 percent turnaround."
Then there's Jack, who has Autism and had never had access to swimming lessons. Most sports didn't work for him, but the water clicked instantly. His dad says the program has been "life changing", giving Jack confidence, routine and a circle of new friends.
Behind these stories sits a simple idea: make sure cost isn't the thing stopping families from teaching their kids to be safe and confident in the water. Yawa funded twelve weeks of lessons for selected students, plus discounted access to continue their swimming journey. For many families, it shifted the impossible into the doable.'
From fear to joy, from nervous first steps to underwater adventures, these scholarships didn't just teach kids how to swim. They opened doors, boosted confidence and built community.
Watch their stories in this week's Peninsula Tale. It's wholesome, hopeful and a reminder that sometimes the smallest opportunities create the biggest ripple.
