Late last year, Royal Australian Navy Rugby Union (RANRU) launched itself into an enthusiastic offseason, collaborating with Rugby WA to provide a development day for current and future players.
Not wanting to rest on their laurels, a similar day has been planned in the east and the excitement level is high for players of all levels.
Head Women's Coach Chief Petty Officer Amy Carpenter encouraged all personnel to get involved.
"The development days are for everyone, whether they are already a seasoned player or a fan of the sport and want to give it a crack," Chief Petty Officer Carpenter said.
"The awesome thing about rugby is it is a sport for everyone.
"RANRU is a family, and we have different events throughout the year to suit all players."
RANRU provides experienced coaching through activities for all skill levels - whether players aspire to play at unit/ship level, represent Navy, or even the ADF.
Some players have gone even further and RANRU has provided a launch pad into professional rugby careers, including the Super Rugby competitions for teams like the ACT Brumbies.
'Rugby has opened incredible doors for me throughout my Navy career, on the field and off it.'
A few have even received the ultimate honour and donned the green and gold for the Wallaroos, such as Leading Seaman Lydia Kavoa, who is looking forward to sharing her knowledge and experience at the upcoming development day.
"Rugby has opened incredible doors for me throughout my Navy career, on the field and off it," Leading Seaman Kavoa said.
"The opportunities I've had to grow, compete and represent at higher levels all started with getting involved at a grassroots event just like these development days.
"If you're even slightly curious about the sport, give it a go. You never know where it might take you."
The development day will run on February 26 at Balmoral Oval. It will include a dynamic program of skills sessions, drills and team‑building activities under the watchful and experienced leadership of Chief Petty Officer Carpenter and Head Men's Coach Petty Officer Brad Thomas.
The day will culminate with a sponsors' meet and greet and the official opening of the RANRU Museum, celebrating the rich heritage and new home of Navy Rugby at HMAS Penguin, a fitting end to an event dedicated to development, connection and the future of Navy Rugby.
