Key Facts:
- Fuji SMBE Macquarie and New Edge Group collaborated to deliver electrical infrastructure for a major new 80,000 square metre fulfilment centre in Western Sydney, part of a two-facility, $490 million investment capable of holding up to 1.6 million items.
- As lead electrical contractor, New Edge Group appointed Fuji SMBE Macquarie under a Design and Construct agreement to deliver electrical switchboards and associated infrastructure, covering design, manufacture, supply, and testing.
- Key challenges included limited switchroom space, strict dimensional and weight constraints, modifying existing equipment, and designing for future expansion, all of which required close coordination between Fuji SMBE Macquarie, New Edge Group, and construction engineers.
- An Arc Flash Study was completed in accordance with Australian Standards to ensure appropriate PPE is used around live switchboards, reflecting the customer's commitment to safety and compliance.
- Successful delivery of Stage 1 has led to Fuji SMBE Macquarie's continued involvement in Stage 2 works, with the project highlighting the company's capability to deliver complex electrical infrastructure for large-scale, mission-critical facilities.
Fuji SMBE Macquarie and New Edge Group have collaborated to deliver critical electrical infrastructure to a major new fulfilment centre in Western Sydney, NSW.
This project is the first of two new fulfilment centres being built, with $490 million being invested across both facilities. This first facility spans 80,000 square metres and has the capacity to hold up to 1.6 million items, including large products like garden equipment, furniture and televisions.
As the lead electrical contractor for the project, New Edge Group selected Fuji SMBE Macquarie under a Design and Construct agreement to deliver the electrical switchboards and associated infrastructure.
"Fuji SMBE Macquarie is a reputable switchboard company with large project experience, and crucially for this project, they can handle everything from design to construction under one roof," says New Edge Group Senior Project Manager, Antony Brizgala.
Tailoring designs to complex site requirements
Challenges Fuji SMBE Macquarie and New Edge Group worked through included limited switchroom space, modifying existing equipment to meet customer requirements, and designing for future expansion.
"Fitting the boards within the switchroom required us to work closely with construction engineers to design the appropriate structural pit and operate within strict dimensional and weight constraints. Fuji SMBE was highly responsive and proactively coordinated with us and the engineers to adjust designs accordingly," says Brizgala.
The project involved Fuji SMBE Macquarie:
- Designing, manufacturing, and supplying three Main Switchboards.
- Designing and supplying three Main Distribution Boards.
- Designing and supplying 41 Distribution Boards servicing the fulfilment centre.
- Completing a comprehensive Arc Flash Study in accordance with current Australian Standards and site safety requirements.
- Completing full factory and site testing of Automatic Transfer Schemes (ATS), power monitoring systems, photovoltaic (PV) remote control interfaces, and shunt trip control systems.
- Coordinating and executing same-day site joining works aligned with switchboard delivery to maintain program certainty and minimise disruption to the construction sequence.
"The Arc Flash Study was important to our customer, as a company committed to safety and Standards compliance. It ensures correct PPE is worn in areas with live switchboards, to protect people against potential dangers," says Brizgala.
"With such complex challenges, everyone needed to work together to ensure smooth delivery, and that's where trusted suppliers like Fuji SMBE are critical in meeting both technical requirements and project deadlines," says Brizgala.
Collaborative approach
New Edge Group has worked on projects with Fuji SMBE Macquarie previously, and has valued their collaborative approach to finding the right solutions to deliver a successful project that the customer is happy with.
"We really appreciate their solution-oriented approach, clear and efficient communication, and fair pricing," says Brizgala
"New Edge Group is always looking to prioritise the client's interest, and make sure we deliver on time and on budget. We always strive to go the extra mile to give our customers the best value with on time delivery," he adds.
Room for expansion
As part of the project brief, the customer requested a minimum of 20% spare capacity, and room to expand in the future, as their needs continue to grow.
Fuji SMBE Macquarie Project Supervisor, Lee Mamouzelos says the successful delivery of Stage 1 has led to continued involvement in Stage 2 works, reinforcing the company's capability to support large-scale, mission-critical facilities across multiple phases of development.
"The completion of this project highlights Fuji SMBE Macquarie's expertise in delivering complex electrical infrastructure for global clients, while maintaining a strong focus on quality, safety and long-term reliability," he says.
