This year's cohort of Fulbright students and scholars visited Durham for their end of year celebration event.

As a key university partner to Fulbright, we were invited to host the annual UK Fulbright Debrief, a momentous year for Fulbright with it aligning with the 250th anniversary of American Independence as well as the 80th anniversary of the Fulbright programme. This event is held each year for US students and scholars completing their Fulbright year in the UK.

The gathering provided an opportunity for scholars to present their research, reflect on their experiences in the UK, and build interdisciplinary connections. It also highlighted our research and heritage connections with the United States.

The scholars visited some of the varied cultural activities on offer in Durham, including Durham Cathedral, Castle and Palace Green Library, on the World Heritage Site.

The Fulbright Commission

The Fulbright Commission enables study, teaching and research at some of the world's top universities through scholarships, advice, coaching and experiential learning. Through Fulbright, scholars from the US or the UK can undertake postgraduate degrees or research on both sides of the Atlantic.

We are a Fulbright Member University, allowing the University to welcome one Fulbright grantee and one Fulbright scholar to the University each year; while Durham colleagues are allowed to apply to research at a host institution in the United States. Since 1949, Durham has hosted Fulbright students and researchers, with a formal partnership formed with the Commission in 2010-11. Since then, we have hosted 31 US-UK Fulbright Scholars, Postgraduates and Teachers.

Working with the US

Durham has long held strong ties with the United States. We have a history of collaboration of research and student opportunities with the University of Notre Dame (since 2012) where we first signed a MoU between our institutions in 2014 and recently renewed it in 2025. In 2023, we signed a monumental MoU with the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, a collaboration which has led to co-creating world-leading research, exchange, and training opportunities for students and academic and professional staff.

Studying at Durham

Durham is one of England's oldest universities, and also one of the most distinctive. A number of our departments and facilities are clustered around the Norman Castle and Cathedral - together a designated World Heritage Site. We offer a broad range of postgraduate study options, taught by many leaders in their field. 22 of our subjects are ranked among the world's top 100 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

Alongside academic excellence, we offer a transformative wider student experience. At Durham every student belongs to one of our 17 unique college communities. Colleges offer a place to feel at home, get involved, and to meet people from different countries and academic disciplines. There are many opportunities to take part in activities such as sport, music, theatre, and volunteering, as well as to develop your leadership or entrepreneurial skills.
