Bass Coast Shire Council has welcomed a $632,000 funding commitment through the Australian Government's regional Partnerships and Precincts Fund (rPPP) to support planning for the future of the Former Wonthaggi Secondary College site.
The funding, awarded under Stream Two: Precinct Delivery, will help progress the next stages of work to unlock the potential of the strategically located site in the heart of Wonthaggi.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari said the funding was an important step forward in realising the long-term vision for the site.
"We thank the Australian Labor Government for this investment, which will help us take meaningful steps toward unlocking the future potential of this significant site in the heart of Wonthaggi," Cr Tessari said.
The Former Wonthaggi Secondary College site has remained vacant since 2019 and presents a unique opportunity to deliver a range of community, housing and civic outcomes for Bass Coast.
Council is currently undertaking community consultation to better understand what the community values most and how the site could be reimagined to meet future needs.
"This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity, and we want to hear directly from our community about how this site could be shaped for the future," Cr Tessari said.
"I encourage everyone to visit Engage Bass Coast and have their say."
