G20 endorses G20 Compendium of Case Studies on Digital Infrastructure Finance

At the 4th G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meeting in Washington DC on 12-13 October 2022, the G20 endorsed the G20 Compendium of Case Studies on Digital Infrastructure Finance: Issues, Practices and Innovations. During the meeting, chair Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati emphasized the IWG deliverable that can facilitate further investment into digital infrastructure will provide a valuable tool for the G20 in developing future infrastructure investment.

Discussion on extending high-quality connectivity and related infrastructure have been mainstreamed under the 2021 Italian Presidency, resulting in the G20 Guidelines for Financing and Fostering High-Quality Broadband Connectivity for a Digital World. Digital infrastructure has been critical to the global economy's resilience and is expected to drive future growth and social inclusion, particularly since the pandemic. In 2022 during the G20 Indonesia Presidency, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) collects best practices in promoting digital infrastructure financing.

Through the comprehensive analysis of case studies provided by G20 members and private sectors as well as thorough discussions with key stakeholders, the Compendium is developed to outline a view on the current happening issues, practices, and innovations in digital infrastructure financing. The Compendium provides various examples of financing features that might be replicated in other regions or projects. Several critical factors are identified to accelerate innovative financing in digital infrastructure sectors. The analysis also points out that the utilization of public financial tools showed more innovation in some governments compared to the static private sector toolkit.

The G20 thanks the AIIB for its support in developing the Compendium, which is expected to support the G20 in narrowing the digital divide.
