The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a 384-hectare hazard reduction burn on Thursday 26 June at Ganay Nature Reserve in the Coffs Coast region, weather permitting.
The burn will cover the upper slopes of the prominent Mount Gladstone, 9 km south-west of Bellingen and 20 km north-west of Nambucca Heads.
Smoke is anticipated to be visible from vantage points across the Bellinger and Nambucca valleys.
The purpose of the burn is to help reduce bushfire fuel loads across the lower North Coast and promote ecosystem health in Ganay Nature Reserve.
Smoke may be visible in the nature reserve and nearby communities depending on wind direction. This is anticipated to clear to the north under forecasted southerly breezes.
NPWS thanks neighbours for their understanding. People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory issues are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors.
All burns across NSW are coordinated in partnership with the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW to ensure the impact on the community, including from smoke, are assessed at a regional level.
Details on specific burns will be made available in advance on the Rural Fire Service website, Hazards Near Me app and on the NPWS Alerts website.
