The Australian Government is introducing a domestic gas reservation scheme.
This scheme will commence on 1 July, 2027.
It will require gas exporters to supply a proportion of their total production to the Australian market.
This is equivalent to 20 per cent of liquified natural gas (LNG) exports.
Gas has an important role to play as we transition towards renewables.
This new scheme will:
- put strong downward pressure on domestic gas prices
- shield our industry from global price volatility
- ensure Australia's energy security by avoiding potential gas shortfalls.
The domestic reservation will respect export contracts entered into before 22 December, 2025. This will ensure exporters can continue to meet their full export commitments.
Further targeted consultation will now commence on the final design details.
