Police have arrested 21 people and issued 20 cautions during operation Plymouth, a two-day operation targeting theft and anti-social behaviour in Geelong's Central Business District this week.
The operation saw officers conducting highly visible patrols and engaging with the public in areas including major shopping centres and public transport hubs on 22 and 23 December.
Most offences detected during the operation were related to shop thefts, with no incidents involving crimes against a person.
During the operation, police worked with plain clothed Loss Prevention Officers from retailers who were on the lookout for anyone looking to steal.
Key results from the operation:
• 25 people were processed for crime offences
• 27 people allegedly committed traffic offences, with most relating to excessive speed
• 20 cautions were issued (19 for theft and one for possess cannabis)
• Two penalty infringement notices were issued for disorderly conduct and fail to move on
• Nine youths accepted referrals to appropriate services
• Four outstanding warrants were executed, with one person remanded, two charged and bailed, and one released with intent to summons.
A number of people were arrested for allegedly stealing from businesses at a shopping centre on Malop Street, Geelong:
• A 26-year-old man from Norlane was arrested, charged and bailed for stealing $150 worth of clothing
• A 59-year-old woman from Corio was arrested and given a caution for stealing $719 worth of clothing
• A 17-year-old male from Sunbury was arrested and given a caution for stealing a phone case
• A 17-year-old male from Ocean Grove was arrested and given a caution for stealing perfume
• A 17-year-old male from Armstrong Creek was arrested and given a caution for stealing cosmetic items to the value of $29.50
• A 50-year-old man from Lovely Banks was arrested and remanded for stealing $200 worth of clothing
• Two 17-year-old girls from Torquay were arrested and given a caution for stealing more than $200 worth of items from a number of businesses in the centre.
Operation Plymouth phase one ran 28-29 November, and 22-23 December.
Police will continue to run regular operations in the city targeting crime and road safety in an effort to boost safety measures.
