The City of Greater Geelong and Tennis Victoria are continuing to rally for the Geelong Regional Tennis Centre.
Geelong professional tennis player Amy Stevens says a world-class facility close to home would be a gamechanger for the sport from community to professional level.
The proposed Geelong Regional Tennis Centre in Armstrong Creek is Tennis Victoria's number one infrastructure priority ahead of the state election.
The City and Tennis Victoria met with local electoral candidates in early August to reaffirm the case for a 20-court facility (12 ITF and 8 community) that could provide a base for professional players and tournaments around the Australian Open, while nurturing grassroots participation, talent and regional pathways year-round. In addition to the 20 tennis courts, eight smaller multipurpose courts would be utilised for Pickleball, Hot Shots and POP Tennis.
The City has put $13 million on the table for the multi-sport precinct, while Tennis Victoria and Tennis Australia have committed a further $1 million in funding and in-kind support the Tennis Centre.
A further $8.5 million from the Victorian and Federal Governments is needed to bring the project to life.
The proposed Geelong Regional Tennis Centre would feature:
- 12 ITF-approved courts capable of hosting international events
- eight community courts
- eight multipurpose courts for activities including pickleball, Hot Shots and POP Tennis
- training and recovery facilities
- strong regional connectivity, with links to Melbourne, Avalon Airport and south-west Victoria.
More than 100 people gathered for a community information session in May to hear about the progress of the project.
The Geelong Regional Tennis Centre is one of the City's hallmark sporting infrastructure priorities leading into the state election.
