Council has installed a new columbarium at Gerringong Cemetery to help meet demand for the popular site.

The historic cemetery with its views across Boat Harbour and adjacent farmland is arguably one of the most spectacular on the NSW coast.

However, after more than a century, the cemetery is running out of room, with approximately 90 per cent of burial sites occupied or previously reserved.

To support community needs we have previously installed small columbariums – walls where cremated remains can be installed.

The new 26 metre granite columbarium provides 81 niches for the cremated remains of a loved one as well as room for a bronze plaque.

Each niche is a single compartment within the columbarium that holds cremated remains along with a bronze plaque.

While demand for the remaining burial sites is strong, with people making hundreds of enquiries each year, it's hoped the option of the columbarium will help meet some of the demand.

One advantage of the columbarium is that niches can be reserved for the future.

This option is not available for burial sites.

Another is the ease of access to the new columbarium, adjacent to the car park, with disability access, given the steepness of the rest of the cemetery.

Regardless of your choice, the views are spectacular.
