Tasmanians are being urged to get behind the 'Canes tomorrow night to help the youngest members of our community beat cancer as part of the annual Ponting Foundation Big Bash League (BBL) fundraising match.
Defending champions the Hobart Hurricanes will face off against Brisbane Heat at Ninja Stadium, with proceeds from the match to help Tasmanian children access cancer care closer to home.
The fundraiser returns following the successful inaugural Ponting Foundation BBL match against the Sydney Thunder in January 2025, which raised more than $284,000 for young Tasmanians with cancer and their families.
Under the partnership between the Ponting Foundation and Tasmanian Government, funds raised will help provide families with meaningful support throughout their journey of childhood cancer and enhance paediatric oncology services to reduce the need for intrastate and interstate travel where possible.
Deputy Premier Guy Barnett said the Tasmanian Government was proud to partner with the Ponting Foundation and Cricket Tasmania for this crucial cause and encouraged the community to get behind the 'Canes once again.
"This is a fantastic initiative that brings our community together to support Tasmanians who need it most – and I encourage cricket and non-cricket fans alike to get behind the 'Canes tomorrow night," the Deputy Premier said.
"Funds raised will provide families right across Tasmania with practical support during the incredibly difficult experience of a childhood cancer diagnosis, while also enhancing services and contributing to cancer research.
"As long-time supporters of Tasmanian children and families affected by cancer, I commend Ricky, Rianna and the Ponting Foundation for their ongoing work and advocacy".
Ponting Foundation Co-Founder Ricky Ponting encouraged Tasmanians to get behind the 'Canes and help hit kids' cancer for six.
"We all have an opportunity to do something critical to help our young Tasmanians with cancer," Mr Ponting said.
"I urge as many Tasmanians as possible to jump on board and help us make the biggest difference we can."
Cricket Tasmania CEO Dominic Baker said the collaboration between the Hurricanes, the Ponting Foundation and the Tasmanian Government provided great outcomes for Tasmanian families who have been affected by cancer.
"We look forward to raising more funds again in our match against the Brisbane Heat on Wednesday," Mr Baker said.
"A percentage of all hospitality sales on the night along with $5 for every ticket sold will be donated to the Ponting Foundation, and there will be opportunities for Tasmanians to donate directly to the Foundation via an on-screen QR code to show their support to this cause.
"Our visit to the Royal Hobart Hospital is also an important reminder for the Hurricanes players and our organisation of the impact we can have off the field, and we are proud to be continuing this support in the coming seasons."
