Last winter was the wettest in 30 years. For the City of Swan, that meant responding to an unusually high number of requests for drainage maintenance as stormwater systems worked hard across the region.
As the City prepares for the coming winter, crews are already carrying out important work behind the scenes to help manage stormwater and keep roads, footpaths and public spaces safe.
Drainage preparation plays a key role in protecting local infrastructure. When stormwater is managed well, it reduces pressure on roads and pathways, prevents water pooling and helps avoid larger issues such as flooding.
Across the City, maintenance crews inspect and clean drains, basins and other stormwater infrastructure to ensure they are ready for the winter months ahead.
With hundreds of drainage assets spread across a rapidly growing local government area, the work is ongoing. The City continues to balance proactive maintenance with responding to community requests when issues arise.
Recent works in Jane Brook show the type of preparation taking place. Crews constructed a limestone access track at Lot 8006 Farrall Road to allow maintenance vehicles to safely reach a drainage basin on the other side of Aquarian Drive.
Improving access like this helps crews maintain the basin more efficiently and respond more quickly when maintenance is needed.
While winter may still be a little way off, residents can help the City respond quickly to local issues by reporting them when they arise.
For local issues including potholes, broken footpaths, fallen branches, graffiti, or bin repairs, report them to us online. You can also use the Snap Send Solve app to lodge a report.
If the issue is urgent or poses an immediate safety hazard (but is not an emergency), please call the City of Swan on (08) 9267 9267.
