Gladstone Hospital Expansion Begins With Modular Units

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services The Honourable Tim Nicholls
  • The Crisafulli Government's Hospital Rescue Plan for Gladstone Hospital is underway, with works commencing on the new modular expansion.
  • The expansion will deliver 51 beds and treatment spaces including 40 new inpatient beds, six renal dialysis chairs, and a five-bed high dependency unit.
  • The Crisafulli Government is delivering a fresh start for Central Queensland and easier access to health services, after parts of the Gladstone Hospital fell into disrepair during Labor's decade of decline.

Construction has officially started on the Crisafulli Government's new moduler expansion for Gladstone Hospital to provide additional clinical spaces while the long-term needs for the ageing facility are assessed.

Part of the Crisafulli Government's fully-funded Hospital Rescue Plan, the new facility will deliver 51 beds and treatment spaces, including 40 new inpatient beds, six new renal dialysis chairs and five new high-dependency unit beds.

The expansion also includes a provision to increase the facility to 60 beds and treatment spaces to meet growing demand, and there will be an administration unit, staff areas, family lounges and a rehabilitation gym.

The new building, anticipated to be completed in mid-2027, will be delivered on the campus directly adjacent to the West Wing (the former Mater Hospital) and connected to the existing hospital, supporting seamless care delivery.

The plan delivers over 2,500m2 of clinical floor space to enable services to be moved from other areas within the ageing Gladstone Hospital, which was allowed to fall into disrepair during Labor's decade of decline.

Masterplanning for the long-term future of the Gladstone Hospital, which commenced in November 2024, continues at pace after Member for Gladstone Glenn Butcher and his Labor colleagues failed to plan or fund the important upgrades needed at the facility.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Tim Nicholls said the new modular expansion would ensure continued access to health services while planning continues for the hospital's future use.

"It is vital that the Gladstone and Central Queensland communities receive world-class healthcare while long-term planning and construction for the hospital is finalised," Minister Nicholls said.

"Glenn Butcher and Labor were all talk when it came to delivering upgrades for Gladstone Hospital, but the Crisafulli Government already has machinery on the ground to start this much-needed work as part of our fully-funded Hospital Rescue Plan."

Member for Callide Bryson Head said the Hospital Rescue Plan for Gladstone Hospital was healing Labor's Health Crisis in Central Queensland.

"Parts of the Gladstone Hospital are now unusable thanks to a decade of decline under Labor," Mr Head said.

"This hospital expansion will mean critical health services can be moved into contemporary, functional environments without delaying future infrastructure decisions."

Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Lisa Blackler said the modular hospital was a big win for the local community.

"This investment gives us the capacity we need now while providing the flexibility to determine the most appropriate long-term infrastructure solution for Gladstone," Ms Blackler said.

Work on the new modular expansion kicks off as important upgrades to the West Wing continue as part of the new Women and Family Health Centre.

The Woman and Family Health Centre is due for completion mid year, and will include:

  • 12 single maternity rooms with ensuites
  • two new birthing rooms
  • two early‑labour or induction suites
  • a newborn nursery
  • eight single paediatric rooms with ensuites
