Residents of Malvern, Hawthorn and Glen Iris will enjoy faster travel times and safer rail crossings under a new commitment announced today by the Liberals and Nationals to remove unsafe level crossings.
A Matt Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will remove the high priority level crossings at High Street in Glen Iris, Tooronga Road in Malvern, and Glenferrie Road in Kooyong.
Labor has failed to provide any commitment to remove these level crossings over the past eight years, despite experts listing them as more dangerous and higher priority than others progressed by the government.
Even though a provision of $260 millionin Commonwealth Government funding has been available since 2019, the Andrews Labor Government has refused to get on with removing the Glenferrie Road level crossing.
In completing these projects, a Liberals and Nationals Government will also reform the Level Crossing Removal Authority's processes to ensure that the community has a greater input into the projects that affect them, and that their concerns are taken seriously.
Shadow Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Dr Matthew Bach, said Labor has failed to listen to the local community's calls to remove these dangerous level crossings.
"The Andrews Labor Government has ignored community calls for these crossings to be removed."
"The removal of these crossings is critical, not just for the Malvern, Hawthorn and Glen Iris communities, but for commuters along the whole Glen Waverley Line."
Member for Malvern, Michael O'Brien said these overlooked level crossings were vital to increasing rail safety and would allow commuters to get home to their loved ones quicker.
"Residents, commuters and local businesses have all been calling for these level crossings to go for years now. Removing these level crossings will get Malvern moving and only the Liberals and Nationals will get it done."
Liberal Candidate for Hawthorn, John Pesutto said local residents have been overlooked by the Andrews Labor Government.
"Only the Liberals and Nationals will ensure the Tooronga and Kooyong level crossings are removed within our first term of government."
Liberal Candidate for Ashwood, Asher Judah said this exciting investment in Glen Iris will boost local liveability by improving traffic flows, train services, and community safety.
"Our removal of the Glen Iris level crossing will also put an end to local streets being used as rat runs by motorists."
