Planning for the Glen Waverley Civic Precinct will progress with Council giving approval to the concept and design stage following the completion of a feasibility study.
The study, completed by ARM Architecture (ARM), and presented at the April Council meeting, addressed issues including:
- The current dated condition of the Glen Waverley library (the building was constructed in 1973)
- The lack of dedicated space for civic ceremonies and large gatherings within the Glen Waverley Activity Centre
- The opportunities that exist to secure long term office accommodation for current and future staff levels.
Monash Mayor Brian Little said the study proposes impressive design options that include a new three-storey building with two levels of library and a third level of office space and a new civic hall.
"The proposed Civic Hall would provide Council with an event space for larger ceremonies, including our citizenship events and Sir John Monash Awards. The project also includes improved carparking and landscaped areas," Cr Little said.
"We will be going out to consultation with the community and we will be keen to hear from local traders, users of this precinct and the community, especially given the significance of this site."
Once the design work and community consultation are completed, Council will determine whether to proceed with a detailed design, and ultimately whether to construct the new building.
The Civic precinct is located off Kingsway, adjacent to the Monash Civic Centre and includes the current Library.
