We are to award honorary degrees to nine distinguished individuals, four of whom are alumni, during our Summer Congregation ceremonies, taking place from 1 to 8 July 2026 at Durham Cathedral.
The ceremonies will bring together graduating students, families and guests from across the world in a week-long celebration of achievement.
Set against the backdrop of the historic Cathedral, Congregation is a defining moment in the Durham experience.
Our honorary graduates are an inspiration to the next generation. They show that a Durham education can be the beginning of a journey that leads to exceptional achievements, leadership and service across every sector of society.
Professor Karen O'Brien, our Vice-Chancellor and Warden, said: "Our honorary graduates exemplify exceptional achievement across a remarkable breadth of disciplines. From advancing scientific discovery and shaping global policy, to enriching cultural life and strengthening communities, each has made an exceptional contribution to society. They are an inspiration to our students and graduates, demonstrating the impact of knowledge, creativity and service in the world."
The Summer Congregation will be live streamed globally, extending the celebrations beyond Durham and reinforcing the University's position as a leading international institution.
Advancing science and discovery
Scientific excellence is reflected in the recognition of Dr Rosemary Coogan (Undergraduate degree in Physics and Astronomy, University College, 2009-2013) and Professor David Parker FRS.
Dr Coogan is among the UK's newest astronauts, having completed the European Space Agency's highly competitive training programme. She now contributes to mission support and crew operations, representing the future of human space exploration.
Professor Parker is an internationally renowned chemist whose pioneering research in molecular design has led to significant advances in medical imaging and therapeutic technologies. Raised in County Durham and an Emeritus Professor in our Chemistry Department, his work has had global impact across multiple scientific disciplines. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society.
Leadership and global influence
We will also honour individuals whose work has shaped international understanding and policy.

His career has played a significant role in advancing British foreign policy and international relations.
Creativity, culture and community
We will celebrate those whose work enriches cultural life and strengthens communities.
