Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) has been selected for the "EXPERT-J" initiative by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), a program designed to strengthen Japan's research capabilities by attracting outstanding early-career researchers from around the world-including Japanese nationals-and supporting their integration into top-tier Japanese universities with internationally competitive conditions. A total of 11 universities across Japan have been selected for this program.
As an international graduate university, OIST has long been committed to welcoming and supporting outstanding researchers from around the world, while fostering an environment that encourages curiosity-driven, creative research.
Building on the globally recognized research infrastructure we have developed, the support from this program will enable us to further strengthen strategic research areas such as mathematical sciences and energy and sustainability. By accelerating the recruitment of international researchers in these fields, we aim to enhance our world-class research capabilities and establish a robust support system that promotes global brain circulation. Through these efforts, we will not only advance scientific excellence but also contribute to elevating Japan's overall research capacity.
Commenting on the selection, President and CEO Karin Markides stated:
"There has never been a more pressing need for science and research to transcend national borders. The Government of Japan was right to recognize this and take quick action. In turn, OIST was swift to respond to the call. Our highly international university is an interdisciplinary beacon on the Japanese research landscape and provides a uniquely attractive destination for scientists worldwide.
Japan offers the academic freedom, rule of law, and rich cultural environment that scientists can thrive and grow in. We are delighted to have attracted support from the Expert-J program, bringing outstanding talent to Japan from the world's leading institutions."
